What was I putting in my poor body?

Would you put the wrong gasoline in your car?  "No."  Why is your answer no?  "Because it wouldn't run properly, of course!"

Then why are you putting the wrong foods in your body?

Your body will not run properly unless you fill it with the right foods.  Just like your car wouldn't run properly unless you fill it with the right gasoline.  This is why you feel like crap after visiting a Chinese buffet, for example.  You may sweat, urinate a lot, and feel the need to drink a lot of water.  This is your body trying to rid itself of the toxins you just put in it:  fat-and sodium-filled foods.

You would be amazed at what proper nutrition can do for your body.
"Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food."  Hippocrates said this about 2500 years ago, and it still rings true today.  Keep reading...

Aside from my weight loss, I have reaped numerous benefits from filling my body with the proper "gasoline."  I'm going to get a little bit personal here, but I don't mind sharing this information, if it could possibly help just one person:  I started to suffer from depression a few years back, and didn't know what to do about it.  I remember having crazy thoughts, and an annoying, "racing" mind that would prevent me from sleeping well at night.  I tried Zoloft for one year, and it did seem to help for awhile, but I still felt lethargic and had no energy, so I stopped taking it.  I still woke up in the morning feeling crappy.  I rarely wanted sex (poor hubby).  I also had terrible menstrual cycles accompanied by a lot of pain and terrible mood swings.  And, I could count on at least 3-5 migraines per month.

Quick side note:  I find it interesting that when I complained to my Doctor, she put me on Zoloft and even offered me Xanax, almost immediately.  Not once did she ask me about my lifestyle, if I was active, or if I ate right.  Perhaps such Doctors simply don't know that proper nutrition can heal the body because only SIX PERCENT of Medical Doctors are trained in Nutrition.  Or perhaps it's because they are brainwashed by the pharmaceutical companies to treat everything with a pill.

Now, I feel good when I wake up.  I have no racing thoughts when I lay down.  I have no depression.  I have insane energy to the point I find myself tapping my food when sitting down.  My menstrual cycles are light, shorter and the pain is GONE.  My sex drive is back (happy hubby).  And finally...drumroll...I have not had a migraine in about SIX months.  FOOD CAN BE HEALING, MY FRIENDS!  I also benefit from occasional meditation and yoga if I do start to feel a little down.  It beats the pants off Zoloft :)

So, what are the "wrong" foods, aka the "wrong gasoline?"
  • Over-processed/refined foods, particularly white flour and white sugar.
  • Chemically-charged foods.
  • Foods containing preservatives.
  • Artificial sugars (Splenda, Sweet & Low, Equal).
  • Artificial foods (such as processed cheese slices).
  • Saturated and trans fat-filled foods.
  • Sugar-loaded beverages, including colas and juices.
  • Alcohol (avoid it or limit your intake).
  • Calorie-dense foods containing little or no nutritional value (fast food is a good example).
I used Tosca Reno's book, "The Eat Clean Diet Recharged," to assist me with this list.   Tosca's book got me started, and I highly recommend it.  There is a wealth of information inside, and incredible motivation.  You can purchase her books on her website: BOOKS.

So, what are the "right" foods, aka the "right gasoline?"
  • Complex carbohydrates (found in whole grain foods).
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables (the more dark leafy greens, the better)
  • Beans
  • Raw nuts
  • Raw seeds

Essentially, the right foods occur NATURALLY.  No additives, no artificial colors/flavors, no preservatives.  It makes sense to me that our bodies are not made to handle the fake stuff.  Just think about it, it's really common sense!  And the "scary statistics" prove this.  After the food revolution, we started to use these methods (adding all the fake stuff to our food).  Ever since then, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and stroke have continued to rise.  Check out this chart, taken from Dr. Fuhrman's book, "The Nutritarian Handbook."  The main cause of the increase in heart disease is OUR CRAPPY DIET.

Finally, in my previous blog, I promised to explain what "Refined" foods are and why we should stay away from them (such as white sugar, white pasta, white rice, white flour and refined grains):

Refined food is food that undergoes many commercial processes, resulting in the loss of nutrients in the food.  White rice and pasta made with white flour are examples of refined carbohydrates.  Nutrients, such as fiber, and iron are removed.  Refined Grains consist of grains or grain flours that have been significantly modified from their natural composition. Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This gives it a finer texture and improve their shelf life. It also removes fiber, iron, and many B vitamins. (ex: white rice, bread, white flour, degermed cornmeal) .

A finer texture and improves shelf life?  Really?  Well, no thanks.  I'll take the natural texture and shorter shelf life.  Please give me back my nutrients that my BODY NEEDS!

Your doctor won't tell you all this.  You must do the research for yourself.  And trust me, it's out there!

Yours in Health,
Rebecca
